Between 2 and 3 years ago a group of environmentally conscious traders in Australia realised that Australia was using and dumping over 5 billion single use plastic bags each year and decided to do something about it.
The Go Green Bag Campaign was launched.
Coles and Bi-Lo (large supermarket chains) were approached plus the Australian Government was brought up to speed on the problem. This resulted in the Go Green Bag Campaign which is now in its 3rd year. The Australian Government responded by introducing legislation that will impose a levy or a tax on retailers if certain targets on the reduction of the use of single use light weight polyethylene bags.
At the end of 2005 many householders have a stock of Go Green Bags and take them with them when going shopping. This is not by any means the general rule but they are gaining acceptance and becoming ingrained in the way Australians shop. A long way is still to go if we are to provide our children and grandchildren with a liveable planet.

Also now we find that many small traders are using the bags by having them printed with their logo and location information thus using the bags as a marketing tool. These bags are appearing in all sectors of the retail trade mostly in the sectors where a natural bias to environmental concern is to be expected.
Obviously it is recognised that these bags are only a step in the right direction, but if we can get a majority of the shopping public to carry a shopping bag instead of expecting to be given single use polyethylene bag a giant step in the right direction will have been made.
We in Great Britain have a long way to go ? but our recycling efforts are improving as our social awareness of mankind’s impact on the environment increases ? so we can be followers as well as leaders ? by following the Aussie’s lead and making an effort to stop using those single use polyethylene supermarket bags.
