Eco bags for schools

Enterprise project, eco schools and fundraising: all you need to know

“Schools are the focal point of the whole community and as such can inspire and demonstrate how sustainability can be adopted into homes and at the heart of the local community.

Eco schools

A Go Green Bag project will fulfil the key aim of involving the whole school and the wider community, and will specifically address two of the nine Eco Schools topics – litter and waste.

Enterprise Project

Enterprise is a key Government objective and this project will cover all aspects through planning, design, marketing, financial, monitoring and working as a group.

Fundraising

Over 200 schools are already using Go Green Bags as a means of raising additional funds for their school. The basis of the project is very simple. Pupils design a Go Green Bag (or buy a standard stock bag) to be used as the basis for an awareness campaign to promote “going plastic bag free”. The campaign will engage both the school and the wider community and the bag will be the ongoing evidence of all the work that has been achieved.

The finished product can be sold at a profit to friends, family and the local community to earn additional funds for your school.

An eco bag project can be incorporated into the curriculum with just a few ideas shown below.

  • Science : What is NWPP? Introduce the Greenpeace pyramid of plastics and discover if and how different types of materials can be recycled.
  • Geography and History: The Jute & Cotton industries. Their demise in the UK. Where and how is cotton and jute grown? Environmental issues; Fair Trade; the shift of manufacturing to China. Social history – the growth of the supermarkets; the loss of High Street shops.
  • Maths and ICT : working out costs, pricing the product, gross margins, net profit. Simple accounting spreadsheets.
  • Design & Technology: product design, materials etc.
